The Mosquito Lagoon is a beautiful, shallow water estuary with a barrier island bordering the east side and the mainland on the west. Part of the Merritt Island Wild Life Sanctuary, the Lagoon remains completely unspoiled. The average depth is about 3 feet, and with its clear water, it offers outstanding sight fishing. The pristine waters serve as a nursery ground for several species of fish, such as Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, Tarpon, Snook, and even Triple Tail. With fishing, camping, exploring nature, and some of the most exquisite scenery, Mosquito Lagoon is Old Florida at it's best. Indian River Lagoon provides habitat for about 310 species of birds, offering a year round home for wood storks, American egrets, blue herons, roseate spoon bills and other shore birds. These birds cohabitate with some 400 fish species, as well as 21 wildlife species listed as threatened or endangered. Among these threatened or endangered animals are the Florida manatee, the American alligator, and the leatherback turtle.

Check out New Smyrna Beach. It is one of the few beaches along the East Coast on which you can still drive. If you make your way to the south end of New Smyrna Beach, take a look at Canaveral Seashore Park. While visiting, stop in to see Eldora House, an original old Florida home that has since been made into a museum focusing on the old town of Eldora.
